History of The Corinthian Grand

Built in 1883 in the beautiful French Renaissance style this magnificent building is adorned by hand carved sculptures over artisan stained glass window representing various aspects of the crafts and sciences of the time.

The building is constructed in Stourton stone with a slated mansard roof and is three storeys high including a basement and attic. What makes this particular roof so special is the symmetrical two-sided hood with two slopes on each side, creating the lower slope to be at a steeper angle than the upper.

This steep roof with windows creates additional floor space within the building. Finishing off this architecturally significant building is the entrance, approached by a flight of marble steps and flanked by paired Corinthian pilasters.

In 1883, Liverpool Conservative Club boasted excellent facilities including; a dining room, guest rooms, smoking room, billiard room and a library. Other features include Venetian windows, balconies, Corinthian columns and pedimented windows.

It was used by the gentlemen members of the Conservative Party to entertain their guests. Each floor of Liverpool Conservative Club was marked by a cornice – a horizontal decorative moulding that crowns a building – although the first floor is the most significant spot consisting of a stone balcony originally fenced by iron railings that remain the ultimate focal point to the building.

During the two world wars, the building was taken over for municipal offices by Liverpool City Council, although the Conservatives remained the dominant political party in Liverpool until the late 1960’s.

In December 2015 Corinthian Grand was proudly opened as part of DoubleTree Hotel & Spa Liverpool as Liverpools Premier Luxury Weddings & Events Venue.
